Being experts in all things jewellery, we thought we'd write a handy guide on how to keep your silver jewellery looking perfect for years to come. The good news is that by following our tips for caring for silver you'll be able to prevent tarnish and easily clean it when it does happen. It's simple!

    What causes silver to tarnish?

There are a few things that can cause your silver jewellery to tarnish. Perfumes, body lotions, hair products and even sweaty skin can cause tarnish. Harmful chemicals such as detergents and chlorine can also contribute. Have you had an item of silver jewellery that you've not worn for ages and has tarnished? It will be unprotected exposure to air that's caused it. Silver Karma Circle Necklace

    How to stop silver tarnishing.

    1. Store your jewellery properly. Silver tarnishes when in contact with air, so keeping it in airtight bags helps. I store my silver jewellery in ziplock bags in my jewellery box. Keeping your jewellery safely stored away from light and air will help prevent tarnish.
    2. Make sure that any lotions are fully absorbed into the skin and that perfume has dried before putting your jewellery on.
    3. Remove your jewellery before gardening, cleaning or any other activities that will make you sweat.
    4. Never, ever wear your jewellery when swimming. Chlorine causes all kinds of damage to silver.
    5. After wearing your silver jewellery, wipe it with a cotton cloth to remove any body oils, beauty products or chemicals that could cause it to tarnish. Don't use kitchen paper or tissues as they can cause tiny scratches.
    6. Clean silver jewellery frequently to keep it in perfect condition.

    How to clean silver jewellery

    1. Make your own home made silver cleaner with baking powder. Take a small bowl, line it with aluminium foil then add hot water, a tablespoon of baking soda and stir. Place the jewellery in the solution for about one minute, rinse clean and let it air dry.
    2. If you have a build up of dirt in hard to reach places, just put washing-up liquid in a bowl of water and soak over night.
    3. Use a commercial silver dip. These can be picked up in most supermarkets. Simply dip the silver into the cleaner and it will instantly remove tarnish. Be careful when using commercial silver cleaners with some gemstones and pearls - it can damage them.
    4. Use a silver polishing cloth. These special cloths are impregnated with a silver cleaner. Just wipe your jewellery with the cloth to remove tarnish. Great for smooth surfaced jewellery, but tricky for tarnish in hard to reach places.

  • Dogeared Jewels & Gifts AW11 Season Preview

As part of its year-long 20th birthday celebration, Dogeared presents their autumn/winter 2011 line with new fashion collections.

Flea and antique markets in Italy - the arts and crafts of Bhutan - vintage stores in New York City - and the Farmers Markets, beaches, and landscapes of Southern California ? all inspired the original jewellery created for Dogeared’s new limited edition collection. The colours and textures of nature, the techniques and materials of artisans around the world, and the importance of adornment in all cultures inspired the creative vision behind this collection.

Dogeared 'Balance' Pin with Om Charm

Founder and designer Marcia Maizel-Clarke returned from a recent trip to Florence, Italy with gorgeous, gilded, embossed, and painted antique trays she found at a flea market. The colours, textures, and designs of these trays led to collecting richly coloured gems that were available only in very limited quantities. These, in turn, became the new Limited Edition Jewels Collection. Large gems, including Carnelian, Labradorite, Grey Onyx, and Cape Amethyst, and small gems and gold-dipped beads are wrapped and hang on long leather ties. Each is handmade to order by Dogeared designers and is one-of-a-kind. Very limited quantities of each style are available this season only.

    Dogeared Limited Edition Collection

The Dogeared Modern Vintage Collection is all about updated classics. Designs have vintage, heirloom feel, but with thoroughly modern overtones. Warm gold combined with gemstones and new custom designed, hand-cast charms together create distinctive jewellery. New charms include a Clover Disc and Amulet, and are layered with gemstones.

Modern Vintage Clover Disc Pendant with Turquoise Gem

Dogeared designers have incorporated new gemstones, metals, textures, and settings as they revise and reinvent classic styles, including Karma, Healing Gems, and word jewellery.

Karma: the new limited edition Good Karma necklace celebrates Dogeared’s 20th birthday and benefits their non-profit partners through the Karma In Action program of giving. A new Karma Sign necklace features the word ?Karma? in custom-designed lettering cut through a sterling silver or gold-dipped rectangular plaque. The Karma circle, the simple and powerful word Karma, and the concept that, ?what goes around, comes around,? continue to inspire beautiful jewellery new designs.

    Dogeared Karma Plaque Necklace

Healing Gems: Beautiful coloured gemstones have been used in healing and spiritual rituals for centuries. Onyx, turquoise, carnelian, and numerous colours of quartz have long been offered in a variety of best-selling Healing Gem styles. This season, new Teardrop Healing Gems are available as necklaces and earrings. Artisans hammer each stone into a setting by hand, creating a look and a texture that could never be achieved by machine. Floating Healing Gems feature round, faceted gemstones that are hand-wired onto a hand-cast mount. Both styles are presented on custom cards, featuring original artwork along with descriptions of the unique healing traditions of each of the eight gemstones.

    The New Healing Gem Collection

3 Wishes: New this season is 3 Wishes, a necklace that features an encased teardrop gem, word plaque, and charm on a chain. Five styles communicate five concepts created by the charm-word-gem combinations. For example, a message of ?Luck? is created by a green quartz teardrop gem with an elephant and Lucky number 7 charms.

    Three Wishes Cluster Necklace

As Dogeared continues to explore new materials and techniques, it remains committed to decreasing its environmental footprint. All sterling charms are 100% recycled silver, and catalogues, cards, and packaging are printed on mixed sources, The company works with suppliers and casters who share their environmental commitment, and all the jewellery and gifts are handmade in Dogeared’s Southern California studios.

Our Dogeared AW11 collection arrives in September.

  • Introducing Jacey Withers Jewellery

    Jacey Withers

We'll soon have the AW10 collection arriving from our newest jewellery designer Jacey Withers. Those of you who read my blog post from London Fashion Week back in February will have an idea of what's to come from this talented British designer. Before Jacey's jewellery hits our website I thought it would be good to give you a bit of background on him. We'll also be interviewing Jacey soon, so let us know if there's anything you'd like to ask.

Jacey’s signature style has been firmly established. It is one which includes elements of the macabre dabbling in folklore, mythology and fairytales but always retaining his feminine aesthetic. It's this innovative approach that has won him the support of a large celebrity fan base including Alison Goldfrapp, Dannii Minogue, Sugababes, Kelis and The Darkness.

Jacey combines an eclectic mix of materials to create each collection. Sterling silver is the predominant material with the uses of leather, rope and ribbon alongside Swarovski crystals, freshwater pearls and a variety of stones that provide his jewellery with its distinctive edge. Unique components are designed and cast in keeping with each seasonal theme. Mermaids, were-wolves, puppets and knights in shining armour for example are all familiar in previous collections.

    Jacey's Coveted Fox Bracelet

Born in Northampton in June 1976 and raised in Devon, Jacey has crafted jewellery pieces since the age of twelve. He completed an Art Foundation at Exeter College of Art and design and went on to Berkshire College to study fashion and accessories. It was here that he realised jewellery was his one true vocation. He released his debut collection in September 2000.

With collaborations alongside Marcus Luptfer and Levis under his belt, as well as designing this years Fashion Fringe trophy and the addition of a full men’s line to the collection this season it would seem that the Jacey Withers' story is set to continue.

We can't wait to get a little piece of Jacey on our website too!

  • 'The Peacock and the Crow' is now Online

Just a quick post to let you all know that our new Alex Monroe collection 'The Peacock and the Crow' is now online. Yay!

The Peacock and the Crow by Alex Monroe

  • A Secret Garden of Jewellery

We're pleased to announce the arrival of Alex Monroe's eagerly anticipated 'The Gardener" collection.

The collection is based on Alex's new children's story, The Gardener, which was inspired by his passion for gardening. Alex has long been a keen gardener, and keeps an allotment in Dulwich, to where he retreats with his daughters to potter away, sit and eat strawberries and escape the chaos of everyday life.

    The Gardener by Alex Monroe

The idea for his book came after chatting to friends at Paris Fashion Week, and swapping allotment tips, as you do. The book imagines a solitary, thoughtful little girl who discovers the delights and secrets of city gardening. Ants scurry about their business. Bees buzz and the breeze gently sways the apple branches. But the high garden fences cannot keep tragedy away and she soon discovers a sadness coupled with the new future opening before her.

Alex has created a delightful and surprising collection of jewellery, displayed in it's own secret garden. In a reflection of the dreaminess of the story, ants and bees and dragonflies nestle amongst the plants and flowers. A large, smooth apple locket opens to reveal it own special secret......

All Alex Monroe jewellery is handcrafted in his London studio. You can see our full collection of Alex Monroe Jewellery here.
