AW14 Trend: Tortoiseshell Jewellery

Tortoiseshell Jewellery: AW14 Trend

As we head into autumn we're seeing a big trend in tortoiseshell jewellery for AW14. The striking mottled pattern is appearing on bangles, bracelets and necklaces, teamed up with high shine silver or gold accents. The trend has been picked up by jewellery brands Ti Sento, Karen Millen, Tatty Devine and Fossil. The natural look of tortoiseshell makes it a classic style that we think will carry on through the next few seasons. It reminds us of a toned down version of leopard print and it's incredibly easy to match with most wardrobe staples. We love the warm amber glow, the translucence and the high shine finish.

What is tortoiseshell jewellery?

Fortunately, the name is deceptive. All tortoiseshell jewellery is now made from resin or other synthetic materials. The sale of real tortoiseshell was banned in the 1970s. Tortoiseshell has been used since ancient times and particularly by the Victorians who made hair combs from tortoiseshell. It wasn't always made from tortoises, it often came from turtles, most commonly the hawksbill turtle. As a tortoise owner myself, I'm very happy this no longer happens.

How to wear tortoiseshell jewellery

Tortoiseshell jewellery is wonderfully versatile. Wear it with a classic jeans and white t-shirt combo for a casual everyday look, or go for all-out evening glamour by combining it with some sparkle. We love the stacked bangle look below. We teamed up a tortoiseshell piece with a rose gold watch and layered Fossil bracelets. Of course, we mixed the metals too:

For the evening, we'd wear a tortoiseshell cuff, layer it up with a few sparkling bangles such as our Fossil Glitz bangles and a simple pair of stud earrings. Wear a necklace if you want, but keep it simple. You can wear it with almost any colour thanks to its natural look - it will look stunning with your LBD and will even match with animal prints. It transcends all styles and ages. Wear it simply for a chic look, layer it with mixed metals and textures for an on-trend look or add some vintage accessories for a classic look. The glossy finish and amber and black tones work with all skin tones.
